Beauty has never been a static concept. Not for nothing is it said that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. However, historically, every country depending their own values and cultural backgrounds, has had standards of their own. Those have evolved with the passing of time and BuzzFeed, in a 3 minute video, covered some of the most famous ones in history.
In ancient Egypt a slender body, narrow shoulders, high waist and symmetrical face were
highly valued. Braided hair was important, for helping highlight the symmetry of the face.
Ancient Greece was more focused on male physique and considered women
a "disfigured" version of men. Women were preferred plump and with light skin.
In China, during the Han Dynasty, women were expected to be delicate and graceful.
They should ideally have a slim waist, pale skin, long black hair, large eyes and small feet.
Italian renaissance was characterized for its religious, patriarchal society. Women were expected to embody virtue, which they saw reflected in an ample bosom, full hips and fair skin.
"The style of the time reflected women's motherly position in society." They embodied
femininity through a plump body with a corset cinched waist to create an hourglass figure.
Having gained a new freedom, American women favored an androgynous look.
They had flat chest, a downplayed waist, short bob hairstyle, and a curveless, boyish figure.
The limited movie roles available for women then, were all characterized by an
idealized curvy hourglass figure woman, with slim waist and big breasts.
"Swinging London" made the mini skirt and A-line shape fashionable. Models, like Twiggy, wearing it best, changed the body image to a thin, slim legged, adolescent physique woman.
With Jane Fonda starting an aerobics craze, women now wanted to be fit. They
aspired to be like the idealized models: athletic, svelte, tall with toned arms but buxom.
The exact opposite of the 80's marked the 90's and Kate Moss what the idealized
beauty type for woman of this decade: androgynous, extremely thin and with translucent skin
Bombarded by unattainable beauty standards, women often turn to plastic surgery to achieve their desired look. Typically: flat stomach, flawless skin, large breasts and butt and a thigh gap.
